The Devil Wears Birkenstocks

I think I have a good excuse for my absence—moving to a different city and starting a new program at a new school—but I wanted to pop my head in and post a link.

This American Life is a radio show that I highly recommend. It never ceases to be entertaining and compelling, and it doesn’t hurt that they use great music between segments.

But this week’s episode (only downloadable until next Sunday, but you can always stream it) has a great third act that I am sure anyone who grew up goddy will particularly enjoy.

Not that I can tell — and I just took a look at it as an anonymous user. The post seemed to be visible on both the front page and inside. I’ll double-check to be sure that the caching system isn’t being too aggressive. Thanks for mentioning it.

I’m in Barcelona on business at the moment, and the flight over gave me plenty of time to listen to the episode that you mentioned. Definitely fascinating stuff. For those who didn’t catch it, the final segment was voiced by a guy who grew up in a fundamentalist family and went to college, holding onto his beliefs in the midst of the “secular world.” It discussed the incident that finally shook his presuppositions: an encounter with a “demon-channeling medium” who was defeated not by prayer and fasting, but by “superior scholarship.”

I don’t think the story itself would be very compelling or convincing to those who hold to these beliefs (and he admits as much) but it’s a story of realization that feels very, very familiar…
