Can I just say how annoyed I am by these "God Speaks" billboards? They're a "movement" of plaintext billboards with eye-catching sayings attributed to God (for example, "Tell the kids I love them. --God"). Granted, some are harmless and clever ("Loved the wedding, invite me to the marriage. --God") But it's just such a bad idea to put words in God's figurative mouth.
Someone forwarded me a list of all the billboards that have appeared so far (in over 200 cities, unfortunately). And as I scrolled through, I became more and more irate at the presumptuousness and self-righteousness of some of the message choices.
How can these people presume to know that MY God holds the same opinions that they do? That he makes smug pronouncements about Hell ("You think it's hot here? --God"), that he agrees with Creationists that modern scientific theories are incompatible with the Bible's account of our origins ("Big bang theory? You've got to be kidding. --God"), and worst of all, that he should be regarded as a distant, threatening parent ("Don't make me come down there. --God"). The tone of these messages is completely incompatible with my faith.
Sigh. I already knew I needed a new name for Christianity. Now I need a new name for God, too.
